Finding Informational Texts

What is an informational text?

An informational text is a type of nonfiction. Its purpose is to convey information and may be in many different formats, including:

  • Encyclopedias 
  • Reference material
  • Periodicals
  • Websites
  • Newspapers
  • Primary source documents
  • Textbooks
  • Graphs or maps

Free Online resources For Informational Texts

The resources provided below offer teachers access to informational texts as well as lessons. Some sites are informational text specific, are lesson specific, and some are a blend. Be sure to explore lesson options in the sites that provide them. 

ELL/ELD/SPED – The resources in the section are accessible for low-level readers or those that struggle with processing information at or above grade level. Although some sites look rather elementary, there is useful information to support your students.
