Schedules and Schedule Changes
Schedules will be visible live beginning on Monday August 24, 2020 at 9AM. This will allow you to see all of your classes, periods, and teachers. If you have a need to request a schedule change, you will need to do so by filling out our Google Form. All our counselors are receiving hundreds of emails each day and they are doing their best to keep up. Please understand that moving forward the priority will be to respond to requests made through the Google Form.
The Quarter System
OUHSD and ACHS have adopted the quarter system to best assist our students in engaging in distance learning. In this system students will take either three or four classes per quarter. A full load of classes is three classes per quarter. For a variety of reasons some students will take four classes in a quarter. In the quarter system, each 9 weeks of class will contain an entire semester of workload. Therefore, two quarters will equal an entire year of a subject. You will notice that quarters one and three are connected with the same class, and quarters two and four are connected as well.
Spreading these apart allows for students to better retain knowledge in a subject as they move throughout the year(s). As an example, if a student took Math 1 in quarters one and two, then they would not have Math again for an extended amount of time until the following year. The bonus to the quarter system is that the student and family will only need to focus on three (or four) classes at any one time. This will lead to less communication from less teachers. Finals will be given at the end of each quarter, as that would be the equivalent to a semester from last year.
On our school website there will be a section to allow you to see all of our teachers listed in one place. Each teacher’s name will have a link to their weekly agenda. The weekly agenda will contain all of the necessary information for that teacher’s class for the week.
First Day of School – Wednesday August 26, 2020
On the first day of school you will be expected to arrive in a live Google Meet beginning with your first class period (bell schedule contained later in this document). Most teachers will send class codes to invite you. If you do not receive a class code (some class changes are being made still) please go to the school website and click on your teacher’s name in order to see their weekly agenda. On the weekly agenda teachers will have their class codes. Be prepared to be online and ready to learn right away ?
Each teacher will have “live” activities (Google Meet, etc) with their students for 30-60 minutes Monday through Thursday during their scheduled class period. Attendance will be taken and entered into our database each period.
Teachers will create activities for students to complete online through Google Classroom or Canvas. Planned activities that are posted on the weekly agenda will be due on Sunday for asynchronous instruction. Asynchronous instruction will contain between 30-60 minutes of work per day per class. The combined amount of work should equal to 90
minutes per class per day. In other words, if a teacher uses 60 minutes of synchronous learning on a given day, then they would only give 30 minutes of asynchronous work for that day. If a teacher delivered 45 minutes of synchronous instruction, then they would assign 45 minutes of asynchronous instruction on that day.
Friday – Tutorial Day
Friday is a slightly shortened schedule that allows teachers to meet with students and assist them with their work. There will be no new instruction given on Fridays. There will be an expectation of 15-60 minutes of synchronous work each Friday. Attendance will be taken on Friday and is mandatory. Teachers will use this time at their discretion to answer questions, follow up on previous assignments, etc. Teachers can also assign part of this time to finishing asynchronous work that was assigned for the week.
Teachers will take attendance in each synchronous meeting. Students who cannot attend a live meeting will have the opportunity to complete an activity and watch the recording. This should only be in rare cases and you will want to contact the teacher to let them know the situation. School personnel will be following up with phone calls to notify parents/guardians if a student was marked absent. For asynchronous instruction, students will complete a district developed google form to verify their interaction with the asynchronous assignment for the purposes of attendance and live daily interaction (as mandated by the State).
Students who are enrolled in Advanced Placement, or AP, classes will be working in all four quarters for that class. In quarters one and three the students will be assigned a “Colloquium” class where they will be working on elective credit to prepare for the subject matter and the AP test. In quarters two and four they will be assigned to the specific AP class where they will receive a potential grade bump. The colloquium classes are a mandatory portion of the AP class.
In your summer mailer you received a bell schedule with more detailed information. Please note that for the first quarter we will be following the “Lunch B” schedule for all students. When we come back to class on campus, we will have two lunches in an effort to continue with social distancing.

Please note that our office will be open for business from 9AM – 2PM Monday through Thursday. The office is closed on Fridays. Our teachers have the choice to work from their classrooms or remotely. Fridays will be a deep clean of the campus, requiring the closure. For the safety of our families as well as our staff we are requesting that any communication that needs to take place be done virtually (email, phone call, google meet) when possible. If there is a need to come to the office in person, please know that you will be required to wear a mask at all times. We will be able to assist you through the windows in the back of the office. Our lobby is under construction and as soon as it is finished, we will then ask visitors to come through the main office front doors.
We are very excited to be able to offer all of our students high quality Chromebook devices. If you should have issues with your device, please contact our IT department by filling out a ticket.
For this year we are not offering athletic physical education classes. We are hopeful that we receive permission from the Department of Health that allows us to begin working in small pods of students at some point this year. We will send out more information on that as conditions change. Students do NOT need a fourth period dismissal in order to participate in athletics. We will be following the same protocol for activities as well.
Thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy message. Please know that our teachers have been working all summer to become ready to fully implement this distance learning model. Although the delivery of the instruction will look different, it will still contain all of the rigor and expectations as we have always had. We are excited to get started and are looking forward to a great year!
